Untitled design (8)The Lips Give Real Time Communications Signals

We communicate less with our words than through non-verbal communication, including body language and tonal signals. And some of the clearest messaging is facial. The lips, in particular, give real time signals such as stress and deception that come from our core and are difficult to disguise.

While most folks can fake a smile or raise their eyebrows in mock surprise, fewer can keep their lips from tightening or puckering, especially in that first moment of reaction. Being able to recognize these signals can help us better understand the communication being expressed non-verbally.

Although meeting in person provides the best opportunity for clear communication, sometimes it isn’t possible or practical. However, video conferencing can provide a good option for getting everyone together in real time. Video calls allow everyone to see each other, and to see the body language and facial expressions behind their spoken words.

Our UC-One Communicator app also provides video calls from the desktop or mobile phone. In addition, we also provide several types of video phones from Polycom. All these options enhance communication by enabling you to also see all the nonverbal clues.

To learn more about decoding body language we recommend getting our friend Joe Navarro’s book “What Every Body is Saying,” available at https://www.jnforensics.com/books.

New Year's Resolution - Never Say No

Posted on Mon, Mar 12, 2018

neversayno.jpg

Never say no? Isn’t that the opposite of personal empowerment dogma? Aren’t we supposed to establish limits and only commit to those actions we can truly support? Absolutely, we need to set boundaries, and that means not agreeing to do everything that is asked of you.

But “Never say No” is two-fold. First, there’s finding a way to offer a solution that doesn’t initially match what is being asked of you. This forces us to learn to communicate better by explaining what we can do in a positive light, rather than a simple negative reproach. Rather than simply saying “No, we could instead say “I won’t be able to do that” which opens the door for a more productive conversation.

Here’s another example of striking “No” from your vocabulary. Someone on your staff has asked for clarification on a project you assigned, which you provide and your staff says “Thank you.” You then reply “No problem.” While this expression is often taken as an easy substitute for “You’re welcome,” there is a subtle negativity to it. Moreover, it closes down the conversation.

In keeping with our resolution to Communicate Better, let's reflect on the words we use. So, for the next few days, just try to Never Say No, and see where the conversation goes.

At Universal Connectivity, our mission statement and core values are based on listening so that we can provide solutions to our client’s needs. We have great tools and resources to offer, but we first need to understand our client’s business needs before we suggest solutions.

Give us a call. We won’t say no!

International Women's Day

Posted on Thu, Mar 8, 2018

Imagine it is the summer of 1966, you are recently unemployed after being fired by a male boss who found your energy and entrepreneurial spirit intimidating.  You are also a recently divorced mother of 7 children ages 2 to 11.

You ask your aunt for a $2000 loan and start up a competitive temporary employment agency business called Exclusively Women!  It becomes a huge success and beacon of light for many of women for years to follow.

You have two more children and now it is the summer of 1981. You organize the first Women’s Conference in Hartford, CT, inspiring many at the time to step up and stand up for equal rights and opportunities.  If there was any woman on the planet a more loving, caring and giving leader; Then I would not be able to call her Mom!

My mother, Joanne Smith, has inspired many woman and her children with her bold actions.  I am honored to celebrate her today on International Women’s Day #IWD2018 and every day that I am a business leader, a father, a husband and a very proud Son!

With Gratitude,

James Smith

New Year's Resolution - Listen Up!

Posted on Tue, Feb 13, 2018

listenup.jpgTo Communicate Better, we first need to look at our listening skills

As we look for ways to Communicate Better in 2018, let’s first reflect on how we receive information and – more importantly – how well we receive that information.

Communication is the sharing of information. One person is expressing thoughts, concerns, ideas, fears in the hopes that the other person responds in a productive manner. When your partner describes the disastrous events of the day, are you thinking about how your day went? When your client is frustrated with your product, are you already forming your response? Or are you truly listening, wanting to understand what has caused the person to share this information with you?

Good communication also needs some of the obvious things such as meeting in person, a clear phone or video connection, a common language and some basis of shared knowledge. If one person using technical lingo, it may sound like gobbledygook to the other person. If the phone connection goes in and out, not only can’t you hear the full conversation, but you become distracted with the static.

Both the speaker and the listener need to be focused on the conversation – not multi-tasking as we all do - to be effective communicators. Take a moment to reflect on your own communication skills. Maybe you could be a better listener by taking the time to understand why someone is sharing with you. Perhaps you need to learn new industry jargon to better understand the subject matter. You may need better phone reception. Not until you truly understand what the other person is communicating, is it time to change roles and share your information back.

At Universal Connectivity, our mission statement and core values are based on listening so that we can provide solutions to our client’s needs. We have great tools and resources to offer, but we first need to understand our client’s business needs before we suggest solutions.

We’re ready to listen!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2018, another year full of the usual potential successes and endless uncertainties that each of us face daily. This year, rather than filling the page with a list of resolutions, let’s pick one and work it like a squirrel works a nut. Let go of the idea of multi-tasking and instead focus on doing one thing better than we’ve done it before. Welcome to the year we promise to Communicate Better.

Whether interacting with friends and family or in a business relationship, we’ve all had our reasons (be honest, call them excuses) why we couldn’t do this or that. Time, money, resources: these are the typical culprits. But, it really comes down to your attitude in interacting with those around you. Are you ready to Communicate Better?

At Universal Connectivity, our core mission is to enhance our clients’ growth and competitiveness with forward-thinking, scalable communication systems. We do this by listening to our clients’ needs and providing the technical resources so that we can design a solution that is as unique as the individual we are working with. We do all this so that you can Communicate Better, with your staff, your prospects, your clients and even your family.

We’ll be featuring monthly blogs that address today’s technology that can help you Communicate Better, whether that’s dedicated internet circuits, building redundancy, learning new software applications or perhaps opening a new location. Our goal is to give you the resources to make informed decisions on what to do with your time, money and resources. All so that you can Communicate Better.

Happy New Year from all of us at Universal Connectivity!

The End of PBX for Avaya Customers

Posted on Tue, Sep 12, 2017

not anymore.jpgIf you’re an Avaya customer, you’re probably being bombarded with messages that the sky is falling. While we can likely agree that while the prognosis for Avaya as a company is unclear, one thing is crystal clear: the on-premises PBX is on its way out.

The last thing your business needs is a dead-end telecom investment. In fact, industry analysts predict that greater than 50% of PBX replacements will go to cloud-hosted solutions within the next three years. But should you panic? No! Here are five sensible ways you can migrate over time to the cloud without losing your mind and your money.

  1. Migrate Gracefully with SIP Trunking

SIP Trunking allows you to cost-effectively migrate to the cloud by introducing new cloud-based services when and where you need them. By combining data, voice and video into a single line that feeds into all your office locations, SIP Trunking not only reduces network expenses, but allows you to migrate to the cloud on your own timeframe.

  1. Don’t Rip and Replace!

By replacing your conventional PSTN trunk with a SIP trunk, you can keep your existing on-premises PBX infrastructure and also get access to new cloud-based apps and services such as Unified Communications (UC), team collaboration and contact center solutions—delivered to your location(s) via a SIP trunk.

  1. Go Hybrid or Go Home

It’s often too risky to do an all-out swap over to a cloud solution, yet some of your users and sites may need new functionality sooner than others. Mobile users, old systems that need replacement or the need to bring in new sites are all good candidates, while other locations can wait before moving over. Bottom line, this means that your old PBXs can co-exist and interwork via SIP for as long as those systems have a useful economic life, as you start bringing in new services at your own pace.

  1. Contact Center Nirvana - Routing in the Cloud

One of the most compelling reasons to migrate to the cloud is the extensive benefits that a cloud-based contact center can offer, as opposed to premises-based call centers. Utilizing SIP trunking allows you to retain in-place premise contact centers while newer locations or on-demand agents can migrate to the cloud.

Here are some of the top benefits that a cloud contact center can offer:

  • Supports hybrid configurations seamlessly by uniting multiple centers/locations, including remote workers and mobile agents, under one management umbrella
  • Allows for easy scaling up and down as your agent needs fluctuate (on-demand model)
  • Automatically manages call volumes across all locations with “cloud routing”—think of it as a unified call queue in the cloud that distributes calls evenly between agents across multiple centers and locations

  1. Selecting a Proven Market Leading Vendor

Did you know that BroadSoft is the global market share leader in cloud unified communications with 41% share, according to Frost & Sullivan—3.5 times more than Cisco the next nearest competitor and over 10x more than RingCentral?  Our BroadSoft Business software suite is trusted by over 600 service providers across 80 countries, including 25 of the world’s top 30 service providers by revenue, for unified communications, collaboration and contact center solutions for businesses of all types and sizes.
